This fall I plan to integrate mindfulness practice into our preschool routine. The requested yoga mats, books, and materials will provide each child with a special space to practice mindfulness with stretching and breathing exercises as well as guided listening activities. Social-emotional learning blossoms when mindfulness strategies are taught to preschoolers. Practicing mindfulness helps students (and teachers) understand and manage their emotions, set positive goals, develop empathy, create positive relationships, and increase responsible decision making. The earlier we can instill these skills in their young lives, the greater the opportunity to help them cultivate resilience and develop and refine their mindfulness practice as they mature. A successful preschool learning environment must feel welcoming, safe, supportive, and calm. Children who are new to school have a lot to navigate: rules and routines, letters and numbers, peer interactions. For many students, this can all feel overwhelming and may lead to disruptive or isolating behaviors. Promoting social-emotional learning increases student success and enjoyment of school which ultimately creates "Happy Preschoolers!"
