Many of my students do not enjoy literature because they do not see themselves in it. By making books like The Hate You Give, and Black Like Me, as well as authors like Sandra Cisneros and Joy Harjo, my students can be exposed to different voices that are not typically found in the common literary canon. By adding books into my classroom library that my students can identify with, I believe that the students will be more successful overall. Representation is important and I intend to show that in my classroom. I am hopeful that adding more diverse literature into my classroom will encourage my students to read more, and students who read for non-academic reasons are more successful.
