As I said before, I get to work with some spunky, energetic, and awesome kiddos! But, asking them to sit still in hard, small chairs is not setting them up for success. Children with autism have sensory needs. Rocking, bouncing, and wobbling are often ways their bodies help control those needs. As seen from the picture of my classroom in my profile, right now we only have small, hard, plastic chairs. If my students are needing sensory stimulation, the seating we have will not provide that. When that is not provided, my kids cannot focus, learn, and may sometimes have difficulty appropriately expressing wants/needs due to the frustration of not having a sensory outlet. Having these items would set my students up for success and would create a whole new learning environment individualized for their sensory needs!
