The purpose of having the lego station is to get the students involved in developing small cities that correspond to the unit we are learning. While we learn about Latin America the student will take turns building a 3D figure of a city that we cover. Each student will have time to add to the city over the course of the nine-weeks. The city will then change when we move to Europe in the next unit. I will choose a new city and we will start over again. I will put each of the finished cities on display in the library. I will need the extra boards and pieces because multiple cities will be built over the year. I believe this will be a way to allow the students to be more involved in their learning and spark a sense of wonder. The wonder comes with learning how to make the structures and using their cognitive skills to work through structural issues. Social Studies is not just history. Students are exploring and learning a complex and diverse world. This space will enhance the cognitive and personal skills that they are developing at this age.
