I teach science to every 6th grader in our school district. We are a small school district located in Clermont County. 52% of our students now qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of our students do not have basic school supplies or access to the Internet. I volunteer once a month at a teacher free store in order to get basic school supplies for my pupils. The students enjoy hands-on activities in science the most. They also enjoy working with technology in the classroom. The students do not like reading from the 2006 textbook at all. However, they do love to learn about inventions and the latest and greatest discoveries in science. These students must be exposed to more high interest nonfiction reading in order to improve their literacy skills and interest in science.
