These book, map and video resources will help enrich my students understanding of human geography and help in bringing the subject to life. Videos like “Living on One Dollar” show wealth disparity, how humans interact with their environment, and the real-life difference between living in a less developed vs. more developed country. A class set of Trevor Noah’s, “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” will give them the opportunity to read rich and engaging text of someone their own age experiencing a political and cultural reality different from what they know. It is challenging for students to shift their thinking of how they view the world from local and themselves to global and others. I strive to have a classroom full of maps and atlases that show the political consequences of moving a 3D globe to a 2D surface. We study why every map tells a truth and every map tells a lie as cartographers have to make decisions on what they will distort. All of these resources will further engage my students how human geography impacts their lives.
