Every single day, my class begins with 20 minutes of independent reading, where students get to read a book of their choice. We visit the school library every other week, but since supplies there are limited, most students choose books from my personal classroom library. Most of these books are ones that I have bought and collected over the years, but they aren't enough. New books are vital to improving the literacy of my students. It's important for them to have books that are interesting, fun, and filled with diversity -- especially since I teach children of color. If I can instill a love of reading in the children I teach, then I have given them hope.
