During my summer studies, I read an article that introduced me to the benefits of flexible seating. I saw my students in the article. I decided to take a leap of faith and remove twenty of my twenty-six desks from my classroom. Providing students with this type of learning environment helps their developing minds and bodies stay alert and focused. They will be comfortable in an otherwise demanding and limiting traditional classroom desk. Flexible seating encourages community and collaboration through the promotion of group work and caring of their classroom; it helps students who require different stimulants that traditional seating does not offer. And most importantly, it fosters students' commitment to learning through sending the message that they are encouraged and supported to learn. By donating to our classroom, you are helping children escape the confines of the traditional classroom expectations. My students will be able to stand and stretch their growing legs during a new math lesson or as they work through a science experiment. If a student who likes to wiggle while they work, can now do so with no distraction to others on a wiggle cushion. Students will be able to work collaboratively in a learning environment conducive to them, whether that be on the rug using lap desks, in the corner on bean bags, or sitting at our tall tables by the windows. Whichever seat my student chooses, it will be by their choice and at the same time they become more self aware about their needs and learning styles.
