I aim to purchase 6 portable lap desks for my students to use on a rotating, by choice basis. All throughout most of the day, my students are accustomed to working in spots around the classroom where they learn best. Many choose the floor as a work space. However, during writer's workshop, I require students to have an elevated surface for writing. This confines students to their desks or to the single small group table I have in one corner of my classroom. I have found throughout my 10 years of teaching that handwriting is a lost art and is SO important in writer's workshop. Students show me their best handwriting when they are seated with correct posture. Working on the floor during writing, even with a clipboard in a lap, does simply not produce students' best work. By providing portable lap desks, students would have the choice to work on writing on the floor. The lap desks are constructed in a way that students can produce the same quality handwriting as if they were working at their standard desks. Giving students the choice of where to work will motivate them and increase focus and productivity. It will help me as a teacher; students will be physically spread out, and I will be able to hold writing conferences with students without disrupting others. As a bonus, these portable lap desks could also serve as iPad stands when needed! I know my students would be so excited to receive these portable lap desks.
