My students continually impress me with their resilience and dedication despite their circumstances. They attend a Title I high school in Texas. Over 40% of students do not graduate and the majority are on a free/reduced lunch program. My students are predominantly 9th and 10th graders who continue to come to school everyday despite the hardships they face--including violence, drugs, poverty, absent parents and teenage pregnancy. These hardships extend even to their school. Their classroom lacks a projector and copies of worksheets, assignments or handouts are not available to the students. Despite what they face, they truly internalize our classroom motto "Together we can, whatever it takes," by coming in for help after school, asking insightful questions and assisting their peers.
