A listening center is a specific spot in the classroom with a CD player, a book, a CD, and multiple headphones where students listen to a story on CD and follow along in their book. Hearing a book read aloud while following along can help children focus on the sounds of words and provides a model for fluent reading. Many books on CD have fun sound effects and silly and fun narrators making it motivating for the students to listen to the story. Other benefits of a listening center are: helps with the decoding of unfamiliar words, introduces new vocabulary, introduces various genres, keeps students interested in the story, and allows students to hear a story multiple times. Repeated readings help with word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. I will have a group of students working at the listening center while I work with a group of students on Guided Reading. The listening center will allow me to select books that are appropriate for each group allowing students to build on word recognition, vocabulary, and fluent reading. With my higher students I will also provide a graphic organizer for them to complete so I am able to assess their comprehension.
