I created this project for silent sustained reading (SSR) in my classroom. When hearing how other teachers at my school ran SSR, I knew that I wanted to have a different approach in my classroom. My approach is to have 4-5 students read the same book during an allotted time where throughout their reading they can discuss with one another characters, plot, etc. Being that the books on my wish list deal with current social issues, I definitely think that by having my students discuss their readings it will not only show comprehension but it will also give them the chance to formulate opinions and head the ideas of others. In the long run, I can only hope that my students will enjoy this approach and take that interest and enjoyment to other readings outside of my classroom.
