Quality and appropriately-sized seating is a vital tool in helping young children develop the core muscles and posture needed to support their developing fine and gross motor skills. Often, ill-sized and low-quality seating lead children to develop poor posture, weak trunk muscles, and low stamina for both fine and gross motor tasks. Without the ability to support their trunks properly, fatigue keeps children from fully engaging in extended learning activities that require postural endurance. To develop vital postural stability, a child should have a chair that allows him/her to sit in a natural, relaxed, and supported way, while keeping his/her feet comfortably on the floor. According to Professor Alan Hedge, Ph.D., CPE, at Cornell's Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory, "Children should never sit for prolonged periods in the wrong size chair with their feet dangling." In a classroom of 3 to 5 year old students, this means that we need a variety of sizes of high-quality seating, so that children are using tools that support their individual development. These chairs will provide appropriate and comfortable seating options for a range of bodies that will help each child develop critical postural stability.
