For the past three years, I have started the school year off with Frindle, by Andrew Clements. Its a fun book, which has a powerful message that "words have power." (This valuable lesson of words can be translated in more ways than one.) I am seeking 30 new books as a start to get my students hooked on reading. All of my former students enjoy this book. The author, Andrew Clements also has many other books that students can easily find after being exposed to Frindle. This novel encourages readers to explore the creative side of language as the characters develop an appreciation for a made-up word. Readers can also learn that not all questions and curiosities equate to disobedience, but rather, to a hunger for knowledge and the freedom to be unique.
