My students are the best! Of course, what teacher doesn't think that?! They come from mostly middle class backgrounds and are motivated to succeed for the most part. The students are a diverse group which makes for great discussions. About half of the students in my class have jobs outside of school. Many also are involved in extracurricular activities including sports and music. They are busy young people who are learning to balance education, life, and relationships. I teach college prep Senior English. Most of my students will graduate and go on to attend either a Junior College or a four year university. However, the California State University system has told the high schools that their incoming freshmen are not skilled enough in reading and analyzing non-fiction. They need the skills of annotating, summarizing, and deciphering vocabulary through context.
