All great leaders learn to read at some point. My English Language Learners shouldn't be any different. Phonics is a major key in helping beginner readers learn to read. They are new to the language and tend to have more confidence when they are getting visuals or hands-on experience. They may not know the exact name or spelling, but identifying a picture will allow them to create the beginning stages of building words. Having my ELL students working with the "Phonics Learning Locks" and the "Touch and Read Phonics Match" will allow them to explore all aspects of Phonics. They can identify the picture and begin to read and spell CVC words, then work their way up to reading and spelling words with Consonant Blends. The requested materials all provide a visual image the student can identify and assist with word building. Being that I teach at a Title 1 School, many students do not have the resources at home to practice phonics. Most parents work multiple jobs, trying their best and they just don't have the means to provide resources. If my ELL students are unable to practice phonics at home, I would love to give them the opportunity to gain those skills in class. The Leader In Me program my school adopted is to help mold confident students who will be ready for the real world regardless of their economic status. Being a great reader will help build a confident leader. These centers will be of great help when they are finished with their work early, or during intervention times. I know for a fact, the students will be excited and so appreciative. Thanks!
