We are engaging in Project Based Learning. This project will include reading and comprehending literature related to food and identity including Esperanza Rising (Pam Munos Ryan) and other short works. We will explore the role of food Esperanza Rising and use these examples to consider the importance of food in our own histories. We will engage local community members in the food industry to explore the significance of food and human identity. Students will visit a local nonprofit involved in food equity and learn about the persons who benefit from the work of the organization. We will visit with a local chef involved in a local initiative to grow fresh produce for persons living in “food deserts” in our area. Students will have the opportunity to visit the farm, work on a project, and learn the benefits of local gardening for the community as they read the assigned literature.
