My favorite teaching strategy to implement into my ESOL curriculum is the use of realia. Realia helps English language learners gain real-life information about vocabulary, concepts, and topics. Since I teach students in kindergarten, I believe creating a unit based around dramatic play can serve several different purposes. Not only can I use these materials to teach a variety of reading and math standards, I can also teach many social studies concepts. Learning the names and functions of dinnerware, how to set a table, healthy food choices, and family member names and roles are a just a few topics I plan to teach with the donated dollhouse furniture, puzzles, and kitchen materials.
