I have selected these books, with the help of other educators and professionals in the field, as books that will benefit my students. Many of the books will be read aloud to my PreK students, as stories they can learn from and relate to their own lives. For example, Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall is about a boy who finds courage to jump off the diving board and this story may help my students to find their own courage.
In a world where children our a future, we need to create a community that promotes diversity and acceptance. The books by Jacqueline Woodson, Each Kindness and The Other Side, will both help to encourage diversity and acceptance in my classroom as well as outside of school.
Not only have I included books that myself or other adults can read to students, but I also am asking for leveled reading books. These books are short 8 page books that my students will be able to practice their reading skill and read on their own. Each time I see one of my 4 or 5-year-old students read a book on their own I see a smile on face and watch their confidence and love for reading grow!
