As C.S. Lewis stated, "We read to know we are not alone." Books are special friends that my students need. I have chosen books to match my students: refugee and immigrant experiences, foster care, activism and crime, feeling alone at school. Middle school students feel alienated and alone in the world, so I want to introduce specific books as the friend who has been there and reassure my students they are not alone. Additionally, reading helps children develop empathy and learn how to interact with others -- a skill we all need. Meeting a friend in one book leads to more books and a better future.
