Yoga is increasingly recognized as an effective behavioral intervention for students in school. Yoga teaches students to self soothe, emotionally regulate, and practice mindfulness. Yoga practice promotes self awareness and awareness of others, which can increase students' empathy and prosocial behaviors. Because it is a physical and mental behavioral intervention, the benefits from physical fitness are also integrated into yoga. I am a school social worker who has personally practiced yoga for over ten years, and I want to share this gift with the students I serve. I would especially like to share this with the group of in school suspension students that I see daily for about an hour to discuss their behavioral choices and their consequences. These students have been sitting silently in one place almost all day doing written work. The in school suspension classroom does not have windows. I have a small office without windows, and it is difficult to accommodate the large group of students I can get for in school suspension. Given that these students have been sedentary most of the day, I feel that taking the students outside to do yoga would be an effective therapeutic modality for these students.
