Finding engaging non-fiction passages for students in the middle grades is imperative. Scope Magazine provides articles like "The Boys Who Fought The Nazis" which have students enthralled by the choices of people their own age. My ELA students not only learn about history with this piece, but also, explore genre, word choice, comprehension and other language arts elements without thinking about it as "an assignment." It is okay for learning to be fun! Understanding this, Scholastic developed Scope Magazine to include multiple genres for the reader to explore. Although some of my students are voracious readers, others struggle with different parts of the reading process, and thus, are left out of the "fun" that can be found in reading. The variety of writing pieces in each issue allows readers of every level to find something to enjoy in addition to, and/or beyond, the assigned segment. Scope is faithful about having paired-passages in every edition for students to practice analyzing information, composition structures for different purposes, evaluating perspectives, and considering current events and issues that affect teens today.
