Mentor texts are a great way to engage students in learning various reading and writing strategies. Students are able to make connections to the characters and to the situations in the book which increases student engagement. These texts are revisited as we study the author's craft and way of writing for writing strategies and text features throughout the book for reading strategies. Students then practice these strategies in their own writing and books of choice. Using these exemplars creates more transfer of the skills being taught. Students are excited to learn.
