In this day in age of sedentary, screen-addicted children, we all know the importance of elementary physical education class. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Physical education increases student physical activity, improves student academic performance and standardized test scores while helping students stay on-task in the classroom. Often times, most of the physical activity that my students engage in happens within the 4 walls of my gym. Much of the fun of gym class is found in the competition. Students love to win and keep score. I find that they are constantly asking and arguing over the tally of the games we play. I try and keep the arguing to a minimum but, if I am honest, I can't blame them. Even as an adult I find myself constantly watching the scoreboard in every sporting event I watch. That's why they keep it on the television screen throughout the entirety of the game. I know that a tabletop scoreboard would solve all those problems and reduce arguing among the students during gym class while engaging their wills to win. In this project, I have also included two basketball sets that will be both accessible for our PK3-2nd-grade students and engaging for our 3-5th-grade students as well. I know these items will improve our physical education program.
