Think about your classroom growing up. Think about your favorite books and the excitement of reading about a character that you relate to. Did the characters look like you? Were the characters white? The vast majority of children's books feature white characters, and not all students feel represented. Children of color deserve books that they can relate to with characters that look like them. Books should be a mirror and a window. A mirror to see yourself represented, and a window to see characters different from yourself. Give the students in our classroom the opportunity to have quality books that can be a window and a mirror for them. These books will be used for read-aloud in our classroom and will be loved by our children for years to come.
