Research shows when students are given a choice in what they read, they will be more motivated and excited to read. Being a new teacher, my library is very limited and students are usually waiting their turn to check out our school library books. I want to encourage my students to read, read, read, but with limited funds, I am unable to provide a large selection of titles for my students in my classroom. Our Language Arts program has many exerts of great literary pieces that I would love to make available to my students. Because of Winn Dixie is a great book my students will be able to use as a read aloud while learning about character traits, friendship, and over coming differences. The One and Only Ivan is another great book my students can use as a read aloud to help teach about compassion and respect for others. This book is also great for teaching about animal habitats and what makes a good home for animals. Other stories such as Dork Diaries, Big Nate, and the Dog Man box sets are always in high demand with our 4th graders. Box sets are a great way to quickly build my library while hooking my readers with a series set they can keep reading beyond book one.
