All over the country people stereotype us here in Appalachia. We are called stupid, dirty, hillbillies, etc. In fact, my students are some of the brightest and most caring children. What is more impressive than anything else is their ability to function with the least amount of resources. Our school has no air conditioning, no track, old sports uniforms, and is the lowest paid county in the state of Virginia. In spite of it all, our kids show up every day, ready to learn in the heat of our classrooms. Technology is extremely limited and new textbooks should have been adopted last year but were not affordable. When they leave school, many of them head to a job until midnight or work on the family farm to help support their parents.
