Many of my students come into 1st grade reading well below grade level expectations. As a teacher, I try to encourage families to bring their children to the public library to check out books, although it is very hard for them to get there. There is often a language barrier between parents and children as well as teachers and children being our district has over 50 languages spoken at home. A leveled library would be key in my classroom because it will meet the reading needs of all my students. A strong leveled library is important in 1st grade being students begin to learn to read and identify new words. This library is leveled from kindergarten to the beginning of 2nd grade and this would help students practice reading throughout the day and at home. Students will be able to use these library books in centers and during DEAR (drop everything and read) time. These children are very eager to start reading and enjoy borrowing books from the classroom library to help them further their education.
