This year, I plan to integrate more popular music into the curriculum. The students have shown a great interest in pop music and feel much more comfortable singing along with pop songs than they do with the old songs from our ancient music books. Having ukuleles to use would open the door to the world of instrumental music for these kids; many of which would never have the opportunity otherwise. We will start the year with pop music analysis, learn about chord structure, and talk about lyrics and rhyme schemes. The middle and second half of the year will be dedicated to learning how to play the ukulele. Finally, students will compose their own song and write lyrics as the culminating project for the school year.
