Throughout their school years, my students have overcome numerous obstacles. Being in a Title 1 district has allowed for some great resources over the years, but the kids have jumped from one program to the next and have experienced gaps in their learning and skills. Being in a low-income part of town, the skills I reinforce in my classroom every day are crucial for their future success in the "real world". Our school has 100% of students receiving free and reduced lunch. Our teacher to student ratio is 1:32. My students are some of the most spirited kids you'll ever meet. But the truth is, they've had a lot of challenges. Living in homes that don't always have electricity or internet, having to take care of younger siblings because their parents work extra jobs to make ends meet, only getting meals when they're at school--these are some of the obstacles my students deal with at home.
