This year, my school is utilizing EL Instruction as part of our teaching practices. In doing so, students partake in a daily lab that involves engaging and hands-on activities that require students to use skills critical in the 21st century, such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These skills are developed through dramatic play, exploration of materials, and creating original pieces. In order for students to partake in these labs that enhance their knowledge of reading and writing, several materials are needed to make these lessons engaging for kindergarteners. Materials, such as career costumes, police badges, and puppets will be examined by students to engage in conversation on the attributes of the toy and how it can be used for play. Students will then gain opportunities to write about such toys and will even act as a journalist by interviewing and writing about a friend's favorite toy. Activities such as these help to develop students' vocabulary, oral speaking skills, and writing skills.
