As a first year teacher, I am building a classroom library from scratch. I want to provide my students with access to high-quality fiction and nonfiction texts, featuring diverse subjects and themes. These books will be used in interactive read-alouds and during independent reading, both of which are crucial to developing fluent readers. I never know the exact book that will make a student fall in love with reading, but providing plenty of phenomenal texts gives every student the opportunity. And what is better than reading your next favorite book for the first time and developing a lifelong love of reading? Transitional and independent readers need books with a wide variety of genres, subjects, and themes. They need books that serve as both mirrors of their identities and windows to others' identities. As a result, these texts, bins, and timer, for the class to track their independent reading time, will facilitate authentic engagement for my students, developing their reading skills and expanding their understandings.
