I truly believe that a love for reading will open countless doors to children. This is why it is so important that a student feels connected to the literature provided to them. By giving students books with characters that look like them or share in the same culture as them, students' love for reading will explode. I want every student in my classroom to know they have a valuable story to tell and a seat at our table. The experience of reading a book and connecting to a character is not something that most of us have to think about on a daily basis. But for students who do not regularly see themselves in the books they read, finding a book with a character that looks like them, celebrates the same religion as them, or has a family model similar to them, can be life changing. For these reasons, I am requesting donations to buy books such as "Willie Wins," "Auntie Yang's Great Soybean Picnic," "Selvakumar Knew Better," "Mama the Alien," and "The Hula-Hoopin' Queen" so students from different cultures know they are represented and valued in our classroom.
