In addition to learning the way to work problems by hand, my students need the opportunity to model these problems on graphing calculators that will allow them to see what is happening in the problem on a graph and use the tools the calculator provides to answer crucial questions posed in the problem. These will also give the students the ability to solve equations and create geometric figures to be transformed without pencil and paper. These calculators will open students' eyes to technology they've never had access to before and spark interest for math and science project-based learning. Even though these are listed on their school supply lists, very few students can afford to purchase one for their personal use. Many of our students receive free or reduced lunch and struggle to have basic needs met. Building a class set will allow me to teach them how to use the technology that they will need throughout their high school and college endeavors. It will level the playing field for students at our school who can't afford to purchase the technology for themselves.
