Obviously, Homer's "The Odyssey" is a lengthy read, but it is based on a plot line that has been repeated throughout history in both literature and film. It is a story to which anyone can relate, and I believe the graphic novel version will meet my middle school students where they are now. Once we've studied it together, students will be able to make meaningful connections to books they've read and films they've seen. This will help make the learning stick. Our gifted and talented curriculum includes a unit on struggle, and I know this book will tie in perfectly.
