I teach 6th grade science in NYC. My students live in the inner-city, and over 80% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many students come from families where English is not spoken. As a result, my students are several levels below grade level, and parents often have a hard time helping their students with homework. In Science, these students need to be able to do hands-on activities in order to build prior knowledge and the vocabulary they need to understand the textbook reading.
