My project will provide developmentally appropriate children's books to be checked out by families and taken home to enjoy together. Along with these books, the families will be provided with activities and discussion questions they can use with their children. According to Reach Out and Read, "The nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading aloud encourages children to form a positive association with books and reading later in life." Often it's not that parents don't want to read to their children, it's that they don't have anything to read to them. While spending the time reading is so very important; we take it a step further and provide activities and questions related to the story for them to do and talk about. This will help parents gain confidence in their interactions with their children and their ability to teach and help them. Parents and caregivers are our children's first teachers. We are here to work with them to help provide the best possible literacy rich experience that we can.
