These materials will make a difference in not only my student's learning but their developmental growth as aspiring leaders of our world. Sitting at desks in rows are so mundane and a thing of the past. Not many jobs function in the same manner as we try to make our young students conform to. I want my students to experience autonomy in their educational career as students. They shouldn't be just by standers in the educational process but included in the decisions. How can we expect our students to think for themselves and be inspired to take action when we are doing all the thinking for them? I want my students to become more in charge of how they learn and focus on what skills they enjoy doing instead of fitting in a cookie cutter box of a specific job they want to do. I want to start young and allow my students to take charge of learning their strengths and how the can use them to become a better student. Creating flexible seating in my classroom isn't just a subject on having "cool" and "fun" seating in my room; it's about empowerment and independence. At my school over half of the students are on free or reduced lunch and almost half of the students are English Language Learners. A lot of the thinking is done for them on what they are allowed to or not have, the environment they live in and so on. Having the resources for flex seating in my classroom gives these students pride and determination to come to school everyday to take charge of their learning and how they will succeed for the year!
