Island of the Blue Dolphins is a classic story of a Native American girl surviving on an island all alone. Reading this novel is a tradition in many 4th grade classrooms. This year, students will go on their own thrilling adventure with the Survival Story Book Club. To accompany the novel, I would like the students to choose a companion book to read together in small groups. The goal is for students to exercise choice, while practicing deep discussions and finding connections with our mentor text. Students will find themselves immersed in characters and compelled by such themes as loneliness, perseverance, and self-reliance. Thank you for considering this project.
