A passionate reader in childhood, I still adore children's literature. In my cIass room, I have a substantial collection of fiction books that I have purchased and collected from Goodwills, garage sales and public library discards. In the past, the vast majority of young children's books were fiction. Nowadays, more nonfiction books for young readers are available, but my book collection remains lopsided with probably one nonfiction book to every twenty fiction stories. That's so inadequate for my nature- loving kids or those that really want to learn more about the planets in our solar system. Through offering an abundant supply of nonfiction literature on a wide variety of interesting topics, my desired outcomes are enhancing my students' vocabulary, teaching the students more about the world they live in and inspiring them to read. Reading or listening to stories about real people, places and things builds a student's general knowledge, providing the foundation for further learning in later years of school.
