Last year, my students were so excited whenever we did a team challenge or game. Many of these challenges are similar to the popular "escape rooms" that adults enjoy. Breakout EDU is the best kit to get teachers started. Students will solve problems, decode messages, read invisible ink, unlock combination locks, and eventually "break out" by solving a larger question. My students learn important academic concepts through these lessons, but they also learn teamwork, cooperation, and communication skills. Another important engagement tool is updated literature. We will embark on an 18-week unit about exploration and discovery. Students need updated texts to learn about famous explorers in our history. Texts like Mayflower 1620 offer another point of view that goes beyond the standard social studies textbook.
