I am beginning a new teaching assignment as a special education preschool teacher. The past two years I have had a special education 4th-6th grade class, and this year I was blessed with a new position. This age range of students learns best through play. Since this is my first year with this population, I am lacking some materials that will benefit my students. These materials will make a huge difference in my student's learning, and will all serve a purpose. For example, the play kitchen, cars, and car rug will be used for children to learn through play. Play encourages communication, improves cognitive development, and encourages relationship building. "We need to consider that young children learn in quite different ways [than adults]. They learn by comparing physical experiences, by interactions with other people and their own feelings. And they learn an enormous amount through their imagination.... Play is what pulls together the logical and creative parts of the brain" as quoted by Professor Doris Fromberg, Director of Early Childhood Teacher Education at Hofstra University.
