I will be starting a new school in a few weeks and would love to introduce my students to the Writer's Workshop model of writing. It is my understanding that my new school does not systemically implement Writer's Workshop, therefore most of my students have not been exposed to the benefits of learning to express themselves through writing. My new school is located in the heart of Central Los Angeles and for years has been struggling to make the necessary achievement gains. With my experience as a Writing Coach and 5th grade teacher, I am sure that implementing a daily writing routine will help increase achievement across all subjects, as well as help them develop the necessary career and college readiness skills they need to be successful in life. Students become empowered when they learn to express their thoughts, knowledge and feelings about themselves and the world around them. I know a big part of enjoying to write is seeing their thoughts and hard work in print. Using a printer will not only allow them to "turn up" their work by making it look professional and fancy, but also help them keep a permanent record to enjoy the rest of their life. I would love for my students to experience the joys of being an author like any other 5th grader out there, without having to feel deprived because their school or their parents can not afford a printer.
