Recess time is a necessary break from the rigors of the classroom. Students need time to raise their heart rates, interact with peers, and have fun! Our playground currently has large playgrounds, but it's not enough to engage all the 4th grade students in active play and social interaction during recess. We often have groups of kids wandering around outside. When the weather gets rainy or cold, 4th grade classrooms lack indoor recess games that will motivate students to take a break from their computers. We are asking for outdoor recess equipment: balls, goals, a corn hole set, paddle games, as well as storage for these items. Students will be able to play kickball, soccer, catch, and corn hole. In addition to this, we are asking for popular board games to be played during indoor recess: Mancala, checkers, Jenga, and Battleship. Students will feel a sense of shared responsibility and sense of community when caring for the equipment. Fourth graders will care for the equipment in an orderly fashion - each week a different classroom will be responsible for bringing in the outdoor recess games. They will make sure all pieces are accounted for and are properly stored before returning inside.
