I have the privilege of teaching 57 bright, talented, witty, and inspiring 7th graders in the Arkansas Delta. My students live in a rural town with a population of around 5,000. Over 95% of our student population is African American, with the majority coming from a single-parent household living at or below the poverty line. My students are, on average, 3 grade levels behind in reading level and 60% failed to pass their literacy benchmark test last year. Most of my students have never been to a major library or bookstore and few understand reading as a lifestyle rather than a school requirement. Before we left for winter break, I asked each of my students to fill out a card with the books, authors, or subjects they wanted to read about. Virtually all of the books requested in this project come straight from my students.
