My students participate in literacy stations every day. One of the stations is a listening station. Reading is an absolute necessity for ALL students! In first grade, we spend quite a bit of time during our day working on reading strategies. There are so many skills involved to becoming a good reader. One of the strategies that can keep a reader from advancing to more difficult text is fluency. Many of us think fluency is "reading fast." Fluency is not so much about reading speed as it is about comprehension. This is the REAL value of fluency. A listening station is a vital component in developing a fluent reader. Fluent readers understand what they read, readers who are not fluent are just saying the words!! Not only will this wireless, CD, USB, MP3 listening center with wireless headphones enable my students to hear fluently read texts, but will allow me to use multiple resources to offer these texts. It will be extremely helpful to be able to use more than one media type for a wide variety of material in which students can listen. With a diverse selection of materials to choose from, the students will enjoy many stories, poems, and songs. This listening station will set the precedence for fluent reading which will help students in their overall reading ability. Having 6 sets of headphones will allow more students to use the listening center each day.
