Movement and music in the early childhood classroom is developmentally beneficial in all of the learning domain areas. Cognitively music and movement are essential for brain development. When children clap, jump, and move to the beat and rhythm of music, it stimulates brain function and helps to organize thoughts and behaviors. When we think about language development, all language includes a sort of tempo or rhythm within it. Children learn how to pause, stop, and start by playing instruments and moving to music which aids in children understanding the flow of language. On a social and emotional level, when children play with instruments and move to they beat of music they need to regulate themselves physically and emotionally by concentrating and controlling the movements that they are making with their instruments and bodies. Children enjoy hands-on experiences as part of their play in my early childhood classroom. Including a variety of instruments such as drums, egg shakers, a xylophone, Temple Blocks, bongos, maracas, castanets, and a ukulele would be an amazing way for children to gain these experiences. Currently, I do not have a music area set up in my classroom, and my goal is to have one this year where children can have access to different instruments that allow them to make their own music! We have a basket filled with rhythm sticks and a few small instruments but, many of them are broken and the variety is limited. I hope that you will consider donating to my project so our children can have an amazing musical experience this year and in the years to come!
