First grade is a huge year where students start their journey of reading, and need to feel safe, encouraged, and comfortable. By creating a warm classroom library, I hope that my new students are excited about exploring new books and finding perfect fit books. I also want to create a place where all my students can gather for calendar, morning meetings, stories and additional choice seating. I aim to build a space that invites students to collaborate, learn together and grow. I am beginning in a new grade and in my own classroom, so there are many supplies that I need to purchase this year to make it the space I always dreamed about. The classroom that I am moving into has tile floors, with tables and chairs for 24 students. I have chosen a few items to help create a warm environment for my future first graders. For the library, I have chosen a pillow and bean bag for comfort and flexible seating. In addition, I have chosen 24 book bins for the students to keep their individual, leveled reading books on the shelves near the library. This allows students to easily access books at their level and interest, when reading themselves or reading to a friend. By using a navy rug and sitspots, the first graders have needed structure with where they need to sit, yet we have the flexibility to sit in a circle or in rows. Thank you to all those that are helping me reach my goal for my future first graders! I know that they will love and benefit from these additions to my classroom!
