Learning in Kindergarten is very much a hands-on process! Many of my learners begin the year not being able to identify letters and their sounds and are expected to end the year reading. Letter recognition and sound identification is a challenging skill to master for any learner, but in addition, half of my learners are also just learning English as this is the first time they have been in school or their families have only recently arrived here! Imagine being asked to name the first sound of a word you have never heard before! Now, if I can show you that object, you can not only practice the letter sound, but see that I’m asking you the beginning sound for alligator in English! Visual learning is not the only benefit from the addition of the Alphabet Tubs to our class. I can use these in learning groups as well to challenge the more advanced students to sort objects based on sounds. Using manipulatives to practice skills targets those learners who are more dominant in kinesthetic and visual learning than in auditory learning. I’m sure many of us adults can relate! Do you learn better by seeing it (visual), heating it (auditory), or doing it (kinesthetic)? Wouldn’t you want someone who is teaching you something new to allow you to learn it in a way you enjoy and will retain the new information or skill? This is my desire and why I am asking for this addition to my classroom. I want my learners to have the most amazing experiences in our classroom and have the tools available to them to succeed in learning.
