My students carry with them stressors that most adults cannot imagine. Utilizing these journals will help students understand how their brains work, how different environmental factors effect our lives, coping strategies to stressors, and how they fit into our larger classroom/school community. Teaching Social-Emotional Learning is not an option for our students- it is necessary. We will use the composition notebooks as a tool for learning Social-Emotional skills in deeply personal and private way. Students will not be given grades for their work in SEL, rather they will self-reflect on their own progress in their understanding of themselves, how they interact with others, and their perceived growth in agency or self-efficacy.
